ARgh! But, I will try again....

First, thank you for sharing the Canadian fall salmon run...I love salmon and, given my job at an environmental non profit, I follow fishing issues quite a bit....it's great that they are running so strong this year. Personally I love salmon and always buy wild, coho or sockeye. Too bad you don't love it. But I do admire your commitment to eating less meat; we do the same.

Also, I'm so glad you won Ciara's contest. I love her work, and it's fun to know you won. I hope you post what you choose!

Happy Thanksgiving!Dreamfarm Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08494214244290730058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133586152925723487.post-80375357885947602912010-10-16T14:39:50.993-07:002010-10-16T14:39:50.993-07:00Vince: Quite!

If someone gives me one for free (I once had a neighbour who did) I will certainly try it that way :) I often pay $2.95 for a tin of sockeye salmon and less for a tin of Pink. I have seen it as high as $4.00 a tin, and then I go and buy something else. Those 'spuds' are mixed with Parmesan and herbs and are very yummy when browned, but I'm sure the puff pastry would be delish. My sister used to make Vol au Vents with scallops and cream sauce in little puff pastry shells. Mmmmmmm
It WAS very moving to see the Chilean miners finally rescued. Good on the Irish for your drilling tool. Thanks for reading, and sharing your thoughts. I like the puctuation fishy!

Alistair: I once bought a farmed salmon (my first and last) for a dinner party. It was really expensive and very, very fatty. Fish farms are a contentious issue here for many reasons, and I agree that holding fish in a tank just does not produce a genuine flavour.
You know, if you ever want to do such a thing, there exist touring companies that will take you swimming with the salmon. There was such an outfit in Campbell River, which is world famous for salmon and salmon fishing.
For a province full of natural resources, our track record is not so good. We have logged ourselves almost out of business (with help from the pine beetle), and overfishing is always a concern after what happened on the East Coast. If it is any kind of consolation, I hear a lot of griping about the Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans, and their tight regulations; ie. farmers here are only allowed to hand clean their ditches, and there is a constant battle between those who want the river dredged of gravel to prevent flooding, and the Ministry, who are trying to keep good conditions for the fish.
Thanks for your thoughts and glad you enjoyed the post!Rebecca S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/16409572371302109142noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133586152925723487.post-60883495430638315792010-10-13T23:59:24.361-07:002010-10-13T23:59:24.361-07:00I really enjoyed this post and the way you led us ...I really enjoyed this post and the way you led us through it. I expected tales of kitchens and baking! I love fresh salmon - like Vince, poached lightly in slightly salted water and just a touch of good vinegar does it for me - but it's a rare treat due to the price. {Farmed just isn't the same}

I smiled at the tin comment and bet myself that you would be disappointed. I fear the price of that commodity has little to do with the product, at least over here.......

I'd love to see one of natures wonders like the salmon run you described but I know I'd have second thoughts about the volumes of fish taken by humans. {although I probably underestimate how many there truly are. I'm always slightly uneasy that when we see a plentiful supply of anything, human nature {greed} kicks into overdrive to exploit it. You described it well though so I almost felt I was there.

regards,Alistairhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16667242161539996736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5133586152925723487.post-76158695643137431162010-10-13T15:45:35.576-07:002010-10-13T15:45:35.576-07:00<@{{{{><

That is the one sure way to taste the delicate flavour.
But it is true, when there is a glut, it's very easy to get heartily sick of the stuff.

Marks & Spencer here is charging E4.50 for a tin of Canadian.

God Bless that the miners will be out of that mine well before 12 midnight local to-night.

I'm quite proud that the drilling tool was made by an Irish company. It's always nice to hear that ones people helped in a good way.

And buy some puff pastry at the market. Salmon Wellington warped in mash spuds, indeed. :-)Vincehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09442327549417743472noreply@blogger.com
